Scarcity of natural resources, the rising of energy needs, recent legislative incentives and a growing concern about environmental issues have triggered an increasing demand for alternative sources of energy. This study intends to analyze the economic viability of a photovoltaic (VF) system of electricity production for self consumption, at the Polytechnic Campus of Viseu. The evaluation was based on the creation of 3 scenarios for the power of the PV system, and traditional metrics (net present value and payback) were used. The evaluation was complemented with real options techniques (decision trees) that allow to incorporate sources of uncertainty and operational flexibility. Overall, the investment reveals economic interest and payback is inversely proportional to the value of the tariff supported in the acquisition of power to the grid.
