MECHANICAL VENTILATION AND PULMONARY POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS: A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

ABSTRACT
Postoperative pulmonary complications directly influence the increase in morbidity, length of hospital stay and mortality of postoperative patients. This review presents concepts and predictive methods for the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications, ventilatory strategies and measures to prevent these complications. The objective of this study was to identify these factors thus facilitating preoperative and / or intraoperative evaluation. Pulmonary complications are associated with other clinical complications and prior identification of their risk factors may lead to benefits such as decreased mortality and incidence of these complications.
